Your dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. Saliva continually bathes your teeth and it contains calcium and other substances to help strengthen and protect them. While this is a good thing, it also means that calcium deposits may build up over time.
If the scale or tartar accumulates on the teeth, it will cause bacteria to thrive next to the gums. The purpose of the cleaning and polishing is to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth. This way, bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care.
Most people find that dental cleanings are painless. Many patients even report that they enjoy cleanings and the lovely smooth feel of their teeth afterwards! Be sure to tell your dentist or dental hygienist if you are uncomfortable during your cleaning. We can recommend various options to make the experience more enjoyable.
Sometimes brushing is not enough, especially when it comes to hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. It is difficult for your toothbrush to get in between the small cracks and grooves on your teeth. If left alone, those areas can develop tooth decay. Dental sealants give your teeth extra protection against decay and help prevent cavities.
Dental sealants are made of a plastic resin that bonds and hardens in the deep grooves the surface of your tooth. When a tooth is sealed, the grooves become smooth and are less likely to harbor plaque. Brushing your teeth becomes easier and more effective.
Sealants are preventive measures for children`s teeth after the permanent teeth have erupted as a way to prevent tooth decay. However, adults can also receive sealants on healthy teeth. Though it is more common to seal permanent teeth rather than baby teeth, every patient has unique needs, and your dentist will recommend sealants on a case-by-case basis.
Sealants typically last from three to five years, although it is common to see adults with sealants still intact from childhood. A dental sealant only provides protection when it is fully intact so if your sealants come off, let your dentist know, and schedule an appointment for your teeth to be resealed.
